We are all members of the Cincinnati Chapter, Delta Kings Barbershop Chorus of the International Barbershop Harmony Society, and we have been singing with them for up to 25 years.  The Cincinnati Chapter was formed in 1944 and is 75 years old.  The Society itself was started in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1938 during a meeting of friends at a local hotel.  The Barbershop Harmony Society’s original name as well as their purpose was the “Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America (SPEBSQSA)”, which remains the Society’s legal name. This is their 81th year!

Three of us were originally lead section singers and that means we all sang the melody part of the songs.  Three of us changed voice parts in order to help with our Chapter’s Singing Valentines Program in February of 2002 because they needed the other voice parts to form volunteer quartets to do their workload of a hundred+ Singing Valentines.  We were put together by random chance as one of several working quartets that year.  We sang together all day doing 10 or 15 singing valentine jobs and thought we sounded pretty good together.  Three of us decided to permanently sing in their new voice parts with the chorus.  We began rehearsing together regularly and after a few months we registered as an official quartet in the Barbershop Harmony Society.  The name “Four Leads” seemed like a natural as that was what we all were in the beginning and that name was available, so here we are 17 years later!  We have been the Chapter’s primary Singing Valentines Quartet for the past seventeen years singing 20 to 40 jobs over the annual five day Singing Valentine campaign period.  We sing an additional 15 to 25, quartet jobs during the year all around southwestern Ohio, northern Kentucky and southeastern Indiana for: charity events, hospitals, retirement homes, private parties, major PGA and ATP events, Holiday celebrations, and have been the featured quartet at several Chorus concert performances and occasionally in our Chapter’s annual Cabaret and stage shows.

In December 2008 we contracted with international talent agency, GigMasters, and have bid on and performed  gigs all over Ohio, from Indianapolis, to Lexington to Tampa, FL during the past several years. The Four Leads Quartet was proudly named the 2009 GigMasters ‘Rising Star Award’ winner for Top Barbershop Quartet for booking more gigs than any other barbershop quartet in the U.S. and Canada through GigMasters. In October 2011 and again in 2012 we were named as one of GigMasters international 5-Star Performers. We also received Their Best of 2017 and 2013 awards. We also have a local agent and one in Las Vegas.

Denny’s brother also sings barbershop but with a different chorus. Gordy’s brother directed several of our Chapter stage shows.  Roger sang in the Cincinnati “King’s Men” Chorus and still sings in his church choir.  Dick is the newest member of the quartet and chorus but has been singing for many years in high school, college, community, church choirs and The Friendly Sons of St. Patrick Glee ClubDenny’s father Roland was in the chorus until his passing in late 2002. Our first public performance as a registered quartet was to Roland while he was at Drake hospital recovering from the stroke that ended his singing and life.   Denny’s nephew Todd, was the first Daum in the Society and Denny’s daughter Kim sang with the Queen City Chapter (now Cincinnati Sound) of the Sweet Adelines International. Most of this was before any of the Four Leads were members of The Delta Kings.
